Duluth, MN, May 23, 2025 – Mending the Sacred Hoop (MSH) is pleased to announce the Take It Down Act (Public Law No. 119-12) has been signed into law on May 19, 2025. The new law criminalizes the distribution of AI images, pornography, and non-consensual intimate images (NCII), making it a federal offense with penalties of up to three years in prison.
This action connects to the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act of 2022 (Section 1309) which made “revenge porn” and “non-consensual porn” a federal offense. TIDA obligates websites, monitored by the Federal Trade Commission, to take down all non-consensual images after a victim’s request. Offenders have 48 hours to comply.
President Trump, who signed the law at the US White House Rose Garden said, “With the rise of AI image generation, countless women have been harassed with deep fakes and other explicit images distributed against their will. This is wrong, so horribly wrong, and it’s a very abusive situation.” First Lady Melania Trump, who advocated for the bill, said, “Artificial intelligence and social media are the digital candy for the next generation — sweet, addictive and engineered to have an impact on the cognitive development of our children. These new technologies can be weaponized, shape beliefs and, sadly, affect emotions and even be deadly.”
Mending the Sacred Hoop’s Executive Director, Cinnamon Bankey, stated, “Mending the Sacred Hoop is grateful for this law that now puts perpetrators on notice that there are consequences for using AI to obtain power and control over others. Using AI was another way for perpetrators to get victims to continue dating them or get revenge, etc. Wóphila.”
