Sexual violence cases often present evidentiary questions and issues that are not in easily understood without the assistance of someone with specialized knowledge, training, and/or experience. This can involve challenges to understanding the presence or absence of medical evidence, the impact of toxicology on the human body, as well as the effects of trauma and the range of individual responses to sexual violence. Experienced professionals can provide judges and juries with the necessary context to ensure that they are making informed decisions based on the evidence and prevent misconceptions from negatively impacting the outcome of a case. The presenter will summarize the law related to the introduction of expert testimony and highlight the importance of deciding if and when to introduce expert testimony in a case. The presenters will also discuss strategies for the identification and qualification of experts, as well as the importance of working with experts to prepare a case for trial even if their testimony will not be introduced. Offered by IAFN’s FAST Technical Assistance Project.

In lieu of Advocates Connect in November, the Sacred Hoop Tribal Coalition is hosting Salena Beasley from Red Lake Chemical Health to talk about the intersection of substance use disorders and trauma. Please register in advance for this webinar, and bring your questions and insights!

Please join the Sacred Hoop Coalition for the 8th Annual Domestic Violence Symposium: Infusing Culture into Advocacy. The Symposium is an opportunity for us to come together to discuss emerging trends and issues in the work to end violence against Native women and strategies to make our communities safe and programs accessible to Native survivors of domestic/intimate partner violence.

The theme of this year’s symposium is Infusing Culture into Advocacy: using culture in our advocacy response, including healing through culture, and making cultural resources available to those we serve.

Who should attend: Domestic violence and sexual assault advocates, community members, survivors, and those working or living in communities wanting to end violence against Native women in Minnesota. For those of you that are new to the field, this a great place to network and build a working support circle for you and your organization.

Non-fatal strangulation and traumatic brain injuries are significant concerns within the context of intimate partner violence. Presenter: Tammy Scarlett, International Association of Forensic Nurses.
